Appointed boards and committees serve essential roles in the City of Margate. They function mostly in an advisory capacity to the City Commission. To get involved in your City government by serving on a board or committee, please contact the City Clerk’s Office at 954-935-5326.
Affordable Housing Advisory Committee
Eleven Members appointed for three year terms. Meets as needed.
The mission of this Committee is to review the City’s established policies, procedures, ordinances, land development regulation and City’s Comprehensive Plan, to recommend, specifications or initiatives to encourage or facilitate the preservation of affordable housing while protecting property values.
Board of Adjustment
5 Members appointed for one year terms.
1st Tuesday at 7 p.m. (Immediately following the Planning and Zoning Board meeting)
Some of the responsibilities of this Board include hearing and determining appeals where it is alleged there is error in any order, requirement, decision or determination made by an administrative official in the enforcement of the zoning regulations of the city. Members of this Board will also hear and grant or deny special exceptions and variances to the terms of any zoning ordinance upon which the board is required to pass under such ordinance.
5 Commissioners elected for four year terms.
Meets monthly on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday at 7:00pm.
Civil Service Board
5 Members with varied appointments for two year terms.
Meets monthly on the 3rd Tuesday at 4:30pm.
This Board keeps the city charter and civil service code current by making timely and appropriate recommendations to the city commission. Members act as an advisory board to the city manager, the city commission and city employees. The chief examiner of the civil service board shall be responsible to hold competitive civil service examinations and supply names of eligibles for employment under the civil service code to the civil service board.
Community Redevelopment Agency
5 Commissioners appointed for four year terms.
Meets 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7 PM.
Development Review Committee
Meets in Commission Chambers monthly on 2nd and 4th Thursday at 10:00am.
The purpose of the development review committee is to review and submit to the planning and zoning board a report on all applications for any proposed plats, subdivision resurveys, land use plan amendments, or rezonings. The development review committee shall review all site plans other than those for a single-family or two-family home on a platted lot. The Committee shall make a statement to the planning and zoning board assessing the adequacy of the proposal as to all city ordinances.
Planning and Zoning Board/Local Planning Agency
5 Members appointed for one year terms.
Meets monthly on the 1st Tuesday at 7:00pm, as needed.
This Board acts in an advisory capacity to the city commission on questions relating to zoning, conducts investigations, and holds public hearings on all matters or proposals to change zoning regulations and report its findings and recommendations to the city commission. The Board also studies proposed city plans, with a view to improving same so as to provide for the development, general improvement and probable future growth of the city and, from time to time, make recommendations to the city commission relating to a city plan and new developments or for the adoption of a city plan. Members investigate and recommend approval or disapproval of all new plats to be presented to the city commission.
Unsafe Structures Board
9 members of varying occupations appointed for three year terms.
Meets as needed.
This Board will hear and determine appeals from actions and decisions of the Building Official pursuant to the provisions thereof. Members will also hear and review the application of the Building Official for review of his action where his decision as indicated in a Notice of Violations has not been complied with. Board members may affirm, modify or reverse the decision of the Building Official upon appeal or on application for review. Members will hear and determine appeals from actions and decisions of the enforcing agency pursuant to the provisions of the applicable Minimum Housing Code.
