New Business Owner's Manual
Any person desiring to open a business or profession within the City of Margate must first apply for and receive a Local Business Tax Receipt.
You may use our friendly website links to download an application, or visit our office located at 901 NW 66 Avenue to make application in person. You may contact us at 954-979-6213, to speak with someone to answer any questions you may have.
Prior to making application, one should contact the Zoning Department at 954-935-5320, to ensure that the proposed business or profession is permitted within the Zoning District for your location.
Applicants for local business tax receipts are required to obtain inspections from the Building Department, 901 NW 66 Avenue, Margate, Florida, have a ladder of sufficient height to permit inspectors access to space above ceilings for the required inspections, make all necessary corrections, and have the premises re-inspected prior to occupying the space and operating a business.
Once the application for a Local Business Tax Receipt is received, it is forwarded to the Zoning, Building and Fire Departments. Inspections will be made to ensure the health, safety and welfare of the people. In the event any corrections are required, the responsibility rests with the tenant and the landlord to make the corrections. When the corrections are completed, additional inspections are required. Once all inspections are approved the Local Business Tax Receipt will be issued.

Tax Receipt Fee Schedule (12-11)
All local business tax receipts are due and payable by October 1 of each year, and will expire on September 30 of each succeeding year. For each local business tax receipt obtained between October 1 and April 1 of the license year, the applicant shall pay the full annual business tax and for each local business tax receipt obtained from April 1 to September 30 of each year, the applicant shall pay one-half (1/2) of the annual business tax.

STATE SALES TAX - Apply at State of Florida Sales Tax Office, 3111 University Drive, Suite 502, Coral Springs (954-346-3000).
SIGNS- Permits are required for ALL signs. Contact the Building and Zoning Department at (954) 970-3004, 970-3005 or 970-3112. Located at 901 NW 66 Avenue, Margate, FL 33063.
FIRE INSPECTION - required prior to the issuance of a Local Business Tax Receipt. Call Fire Prevention Inspections at (954) 971-6232 for an appointment.

THE Local Business Tax Receipt YEAR COMMENCES OCTOBER 1 AND EXPIRES SEPTEMBER 30. For licenses applied for on or after April 1 of each year, a half-year fee will apply, and the license will expire on September 30. RENEWAL NOTICES ARE MAILED BY THE MIDDLE OF JULY OF EACH YEAR; HOWEVER, IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OWNERS OF THE BUSINESSES TO RENEW THEIR Local Business Tax Receipts BY OCTOBER 1.
