Margate/Coconut Creek Fire Department EMS Division

Margate Explorers have been named Broward Explorer Post of the Year for 2005!

The Department’s commitment to excellence has been rewarded with excellent results on the most recent State EMS on site review. Most recently, a production crew from The Discovery Channel was sent to Margate to film a re-enactment of a trench rescue that occurred in 1996.

Many of the Firefighter/Paramedic employeed by the Margate Fire Department are instructors in CPR, ACLS, and PALS through the American Heart Association. Some of them are also instructors at local colleges and academies. City employees are trained by our instructors throughout the City of Margate in CPR and the use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). These AEDs will be in every public building, making Margate one of the few cities to have AEDs in all public buildings.

Margate Fire Rescue also participates in the Vial of Life Program, which aids our paramedics in history-taking. Anyone wishing to get a copy of this form can either download it from our web site, call or just come by.

A program the Department is very proud of is its Explorer Program. This program trains young people in first-aid and fire ground safety. We then let these teenagers “ride out” on actual calls, where they are prepared by our Firefighter/Paramedics for a future in the Fire Service. Working along with the Firefighters, the Explorers have built houses for Habitat for Humanity, and raised money for charities such as the American Cancer Society and Muscular Dystrophy. The success of the Explorer Program can be judged by the number of “off-duty” rescues these young people have been involved in. Margate Explorers have been named Broward Explorer Post of the Year for 2005. This is the third year in a row that we have won this award!
