Patrol

Patrol Division

Approximately half of the department’s personnel are assigned to the Patrol Division.  Police Officers and Community Service Aides are assigned to specific geographical locations (neighborhoods) and are available to provide police services to the citizenry, seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day.  The Division is organized into four Platoons.  Each Platoon is supervised by a Platoon Commander and two Sergeants.  Normally, each Platoon has a minimum of twelve officers providing a wide variety of services to the community.

In addition to these officers, Community Service Aides respond to non-emergency calls for service, as well as traffic crashes.  These civilian employees provide many of the services that would normally have to be provided by law enforcement officers.  As a result, police officers are relieved from responding to “routine”, non-emergency calls and can concentrate their efforts, along with personnel from other divisions, on crime prevention activities and working on long term solutions to neighborhood quality of life issues.

Special Enforcement Team (SET)

The (SET) officers work as a team to gather criminal intelligence, as well as the prevention, apprehension and arrest of law violators. Areas of special concern for SET include burglary, robbery, auto theft, quality of life issues, gang related activity, DUI and other crime trends.

Traffic Enforcement Unit

The Traffic Unit is deployed into the community, utilizing both marked police cars and motorcycles.  In order to reduce the number and severity of motor vehicle accidents, they enforce the traffic laws throughout the City, utilizing statistical information to determine where and when to apply their enforcement efforts.

Marine Patrol Unit

The Margate Police Department utilizes a patrol boat to provide police service on waterways located within the City of Margate.  The marine patrol boat will be used for special purpose patrol, search and rescue operations, and salvage operations.

K-9 Unit

The Margate Police Department  utilizes the Canine Unit as a faster, safer, and more effective way to search for and control suspects. The  department uses the canine to support and enhance its law enforcement goal.

Crime Analysis Unit

Crime analysis consists of systematic, analytical processes directed at providing timely and pertinent information relative to crime patterns and trend correlations to assist operational and administrative personnel in planning the deployment of resources for the prevention and suppression of criminal activities, aiding the investigative process, and increasing apprehensions and the clearance of cases.

The Crime Analysis Unit of the Margate Police Department assists in meeting the basic objectives of crime prevention and suppression, apprehension, and the recovery of stolen property.  One way the Crime Analysis Unit performs this function is by producing the Crime Stats Report.  This weekly report summarizes the criminal activity that occurred in each zone.  Factors included in this report are crime location, day and time of occurrence, property stolen, point of entry/exit, and any suspect information.  The Crime Stats Report may also include crime maps, charts and graphs, and photos of known offenders.

The Crime Analysis Unit also produces daily bulletins, which contain information from recent crime and arrest reports.  They may also include alert and comment messages, missing persons information, all point bulletin information, and crime and/or suspect information, which has been contributed from outside agencies.  These daily bulletins can be sent directly to officers in the field via laptop computers.
