The City of Margate’s Advanced Life Support (ALS) Competition Team took first place at this year’s “First There, First Care” conference, taking place June 14-18 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel. The competition was part of the largest EMS conference in South Florida for emergency medical technicians, paramedics, nurses, physicians, and healthcare professionals.
“We are thrilled and grateful to showcase Margate’s skills and expertise in handling emergency calls for life-threatening situations,” said Margate Fire Chief Roberto Lorenzo. “This competition was fierce. I’m so proud our team was ranked the best among 18 other talented fire rescue groups.”
The Margate fire rescue team, represented by Captain Vito Labriola, Lieutenant Rolando Jimenez, and Firefighter Paramedic Yoanny Batista, was tested on treating seven patients at a nursing home filled with ex-presidents of the United States. The scenario challenged the rescuers’ ability to organize, manage, and treat all patients in just 15 minutes.
The City of Margate Fire Department holds a Class 1 rating for fire protection from the Insurance Services Office (ISO). The department provides fire suppression, fire safety inspections, fire investigations, dive rescue, vehicle extrication, and emergency medical services to the Margate community.
